Recently, I downloaded Big Mike and DJ Thoro’s new mix with Cassidy, Apply Pressure on nahright.com. Haven’t heard from Cassidy in a while but to me the mix sounds pretty good. But out of the 20+ tracks, one sticks out the most to me, Nightmares; which begs to asks the question: Is Cass airing out Lil’ Wayne??? With all that’s going on with the “reinvention” of hip hop, do we really need another rap beef right now?? Do we really want one?? I’ll leave it up to you to decide.
In the June issue of King magazine (yeah, the one with Joe Budden’s girl, Tahiry on the cover), King Mag staff compiled a list of the eight most unpopular rap facts. Coming in at number six was Lil’ Wayne as “the greatest punchline rapper, EVER!!” No offense to Wayne but we all know he is not. Hip hop music or simply “rap” is based around using metaphors, wit and punchlines, so with a history of 30 years and hundreds of known MCs, Wayne can’t be the greatest, especially with the likes of Jay-Z, Jadakiss, Fabolous and Cassidy still very active. If you think he’s better than them, that’s your personal taste but he isn’t the greatest and I guess that supposed “fact” touched a nerve in Cassidy.
But back to this song Nightmares. At first, I didn’t think anything while listening but to just look out for the punchlines Cass is most known for spittin’. Then in that song, I started hearing things; little things that only a true school fan or MC would hear even if they weren’t anticipating jabs. For instance, on Keri Hilson’s Turnin Me On, Wayne has a line that goes “Baby I’m the shit and that’s the only thing you’ll smell around me.” On Nightmares, Cassidy has a line that goes “….Your an asshole, I’m the shit you just smell like some, get it!” But that’s just one of the many lines he drops referencing Wayne in some form.
For real, I like Wayne and admire his growth as an artist and as an MC. When you think about it, statistically, he is one of the top five greatest “rappers” dead or alive. He enhanced his skill through using battle techniques yet hes never battled anyone! He dodged 50 cent, ignored Gillie da Kid and in retaliation against BG, he wrote a tribute song to the Hot boys. He claimed to be a “Rapper Eater” but ate no one. Me personally, I’d kill to see Wayne on YouTube or this site, on a street corner or basketball court going word for word, line for line with Cassidy but currently, at his level we’ll never see that. We might never hear it either, although it would be good for hip hop. But then again, this is all just speculation. I don’t know if Cass is really going at him or not. I tell you what though, for the excitement of Hiphop, you decide.
